Each contact lens contains a blend of three colors to create a subtle color change. FreshLook Colorblend contacts come in an array of colors, including blue, hazel, green, gray, sapphire and brown. To find a color that works for you, visit the FreshLook Colorblends website, where you can upload a color photograph of yourself and “try on” different colored lenses. FreshLook® offers a wide palette of beautiful colors. Color selection depends on your natural eye color, hair color, skin tone, and the type of change you’d like. As with all contact lenses, FreshLook Colorblends are available with a prescription from a doctor.

General Tips:

Wash your hands and rinse thoroughly before handling lenses

Dry your hands with a lint-free towel

Use finger tips to handle lens (avoid finger nails or any other sharp object)

Check if lens is clean, wet and damage-free

Things You’ll Need:

Hand soap and towel

Mirror

Contact case

Contact solution

How To Insert Your FreshLook Colorblends Lenses:

Wash your hands with soap and warm water and dry your hands with a clean towel. Make sure you wash your hands thoroughly before applying your contact lenses, but avoid overly scented or oily soaps that might adhere to the lens surface. Especially avoid using products containing lanolin.

Carefully peel the foil back from your contact lens package. There will be one contact lens per package.

If you have a different prescription for each eye, there will be an indication on the disposable case that tells you whether that lens is for your right or left eye.

Position the contact on the tip of your index finger and rinse it with a no-rub cleansing solution designed for contact lenses. Take your pointer or index finger and gently slide it under the curved part of the lens. Make sure the edges of the FreshLook Colorblends contact are pointing upwards and not pointing out. If the edges of the contact are pointing out, the contact is probably inside out. If this happens, simply flip the contact over on your finger so the edges are pointing up.

Look into a mirror and gently pull up on your upper eyelid and place the contact so it is directly above your iris. Slowly place the contact onto your eye and pull away your finger.

Blink your eye slowly to make sure the contact is properly inserted. When FreshLook Colorblends are properly applied, you should feel nothing. If you have any discomfort or pain, remove the contact immediately and sterilize the contact with your no-rub contact solution. Once the contact is clean, repeat Steps 3 and 4.

Repeat Steps 3 to 5 to insert another contact into your other eye.

Remove your FreshLook Colorblends contacts at the end of each day. Wearing your contacts to bed increases your risk of eye infection and irritation. To remove your contacts, gently pull upwards on your upper eyelid and pinch the bottom of the contact while simultaneously pulling it from your eye. Place the contact into a clean contact case and cover it with a no-rub contact solution.

Dispose of your contact lenses after 1 to 2 weeks, depending on your doctor’s instructions. Each pair of FreshLook Colorblends is designed to be worn temporarily and no longer than 2 weeks.

The high cost of health INSURANCE can be directly tied to the high cost of health CARE. Why does the care cost so much? That is the million dollar question. There are many reasons for the high cost of care. I will outline one that we all forget here. TECHNOLOGY. We all want it when we are sick or hurt.

Decades ago we had X-Rays, yes old fashioned X-rays. Today, we have MRI’s, CAT Scans etc. When we are sick or hurt, we want the latest imaging technology to be employed to diagnose our issue or pain.

Decades ago, we had aspirin. Today we have all kinds of pain killers, cholesterol lowering drugs, mood altering drugs etc. I could go on and on.

Would you like to purchase a health insurance policy that does not cover those fabulous things? When we pay the premium yes. When we need care, no way.

Health Care Costs Continue to Rise

Health Care costs in New Hampshire continue to rise for a multitude of reasons. The reasons are very complicated and interconnected. This blog will be attempting to raise the level of awareness, empower the consumer and frame a discussion of the possible solutions.

Control the cost of YOUR Health Care with Health Savings Accounts

Reduce you health insurance costs with the use of a concept called a Health Savings Account – HSA. This concept has two components. Component #1 is a traditional health insurance policy with a high deductible. The premium for this type of policy is lower than an HMO for example. Component #2 is an actual savings account (HSA) with huge tax advantages. BETTER THAN AN IRA!!!!!! Tax free growth. Want to know more????

Why don’t we treat the healthcare system like any other retailer?

It seems to me that in addition to realizing that healthcare costs more every year due to medical advances and technology, healthcare costs more due to the fact that we do not question costs in the system. When is the last time you asked a hospital what your MRI was going to cost? For an idea of the huge disparity in costs from one facility to the next, visit www.nhhealthcost.org . Let me know what you think??

When cared for properly, soft contact lenses can provide a healthy, comfortable and convenient vision correction option. Whether you are new to contact lenses or have been wearing them for years, the following tips will help you to enjoy the benefits of contact lenses.

Furthermore, proper follow-up care by your eye doctor is essential to ensure eye health throughout your life. Over time, your eyes and lenses can change, often without symptoms or warning signs which may put you at risk for developing potentially serious complications, including vision loss. Regular ongoing professional care can help to ensure a lifetime of good vision and eye health.

Follow a Wearing Schedule

Different lenses are made for different wearing schedules. While some lenses can potentially be worn for a week or even a month of continuous wear, others are meant to be taken out daily. To protect your eyes from serious complications, it is important that you follow the wearing schedule that your eye care professional recommends. Please consult your eye care professional if you have any questions about the proper wearing schedule of your lenses.

Inserting and Removing Your Lenses

It is important that you wash, rinse and dry your hands thoroughly each time you handle your lenses. Good hygiene helps to eliminate germs which can cause eye infection – especially for smokers. Do not insert a lens into an eye that is red, irritated or painful. In these instances, you should contact your eye care professional immediately before continuing contact lens use.

Contact Lenses Care

Depending on the type of lens you are wearing, there are many different options for cleaning and disinfecting your lenses. Some lenses, such as daily disposable lenses, require little to no lens care – they are simply thrown away after each use. However, if you wear lenses that your eye care professional has recommended that you take out and re-insert into your eye, they should be cleaned and disinfected after each use. Proper care for your lenses can help your lenses stay clean and comfortable for you to wear. Your eye care professional can help you decide what lens care solutions are best for you.

Always Try to Reduce the Risk for Infection

Clean and safe handling of contact lenses is one of the most important measures contact lens wearers can take to protect their vision. Follow these tips, and they can help you avoid any adverse events:

You should always wash your hands with soap before you handle your contact lens or touch your eye.

Never purchase any contact lensses that is not prescribed by your doctor.

Do not share your cosmetic contact lenses, as this could lead to serious eye infections.

Never use the tap water to rinse your lenses or your lens case.

Use fresh solution each time you place your lenses in a lens storage case.

A new lens case should be used with each new bottle of solution or at least once in three month.

Stick to the wearing schedule that your doctor prescribes and dispose of your lenses when it is recommended.

Do not leave your contact lenses in overnight. Contact lenses should not be worn for longer than 8 hours at a time.

Swimming while wearing contact lenses can cause serious problems and is not recommended. Wear protective goggles while swimming. Ask your eye doctor for specific advice regarding swimming with lenses.

Any Problems with contact lenses?

If you experience any problems with your contact lenses seek immediate medical attention. Discomfort can be an early sign of a more serious complication, and early treatment can have a significant impact on overcoming problems.

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama on Tuesday signed the sweeping health care reform legislation that was passed by the House of Representatives on Sunday night.

The legislation will massively revamp the nation’s health care delivery and financing system. By far, the biggest changes would be expanding Medicaid and establishing federal health insurance premium subsidies to the lower and middle-income uninsured. Congressional budget analysts estimate those changes could result in as many as 32 million uninsured gaining coverage.

The Senate today will begin debate on a second reform measure, a so-called reconciliation bill that also was approved by the House. That bill is designed to alter certain aspects of the main reform measure.

The legislation is packed with provisions that will directly affect employer-provided health care plans.

Some will require almost immediate action by employers. For example, within six months after enactment, employers will have to amend their plans to extend coverage to employees’ adult children up to age 26, if those dependents are not eligible for other group coverage.

Bigger changes are further down the road. By 2013, employers will have to redesign their flexible spending accounts to impose a $2,500 annual limit on contributions. There is no limit now, though employers typically impose limits between $4,000 and $5,000.

Also in 2013, employers providing prescription drug coverage to Medicare-eligible retirees will lose a tax break. Under a 2003 law, employers providing prescription drug coverage at least equal to Medicare Part D receive tax-free payments from the government equal to 28% of what they spend—within a certain range—on retiree prescription drug coverage. The subsidy will continue under the legislation, but employers will be barred from taking a tax deduction on expenses equal to the subsidy starting in 2013.

That change in tax law may lead some employers to drop the coverage, benefit experts say.

In 2014, employers with at least 50 employees that do not offer coverage will pay a tax of $2,000 for each employee without coverage. In computing the tax, the first 30 employees would not be counted.

Also in 2014, a new affordability test will kick in that could result in employers facing assessments unless they redesign their plans. If the premium paid by an employee exceeds 9.5% of their income and the employee uses federal health insurance premium subsidies to purchase coverage through new state health insurance exchanges, the employer would have to pay an assessment of $3,000 for that employee.

Employers most exposed to that assessment will be those with relatively low-paid workforces and that require employees to make hefty premium contributions relative to their income.

Starting in 2018, a 40% excise tax would be imposed on health insurance premiums exceeding $10,200 for single coverage and $27,500 for family coverage. The cost thresholds triggering the tax will be slightly higher plans for covering retirees or employees in certain high-risk industries. In 2019, the thresholds would rise to match the increase in the Consumer Price Index, plus one percentage point.

When choosing the means of vision correction – contact lenses or glasses – of cource contact lenses are more convenient. For example, using contact lenses you can wear sunglasses on a sunny day (this is especially handy if you’re driving the car). The frame when wearing corrective glasses is constantly in the field of view than its limit, while the contact lenses do not interfere with the eye to see. That’s why I chose contact lenses.

The main thing in contact lenses wearing is the right care. You must strictly comply with all recommendations of ophthalmologist and rules for the use of lenses and care for container storage. Disregarding these rules may lead to serious eye damage and the development of different eye diseases. But do not hurry to abandon such a convenient invention of mankind! Terms of care are quite simple and it only takes 5-15 minutes of your time each day.

The most important condition is cleanliness. It is the guarantee of your health. First of all, you should always wash your hands before you putting on or taking off your contacts. Secondly, do not use oily cosmetics, soap, cream, lotions, before touching the lenses.

Attention, beautiful ladies! Lenses should be put on before applying make-up and you should take contacts off before you are going to remove makeup. And always close your eyes before using hair spray or other aerosols.

Try not to sunbathe while wearing lenses and do not smoke. If you do sports (especially aquatic species), consult with an ophthalmologist. I always take off my lenses before visiting the solarium, pool, sauna. But if you are in the gym, the lenses are simply irreplaceable.

You must use a special solution for contact lenses. It is very close in composition to tears of an adult, so the solution doesn’t harm to your eyes. Do not use tap water to wash your contacts! This water contains many impurities that may contaminate the lens and cause inflammation to your eyes. And never leave your lenses for a long time without a solution, because they dry out and become brittle. Such lenses are no longer suitable and they should be discarded and replaced with new ones.

The solution should be changed after each use. And if you leave the lens for a long time in the solution, you need to change it at least once every five days. And never mix different solutions together, because their chemical composition may vary and there can be possible side effects. If you want to use the new solution, you should wash the container with boiled water and allow it to dry properly.

Talking about the terms of the lenses, you should know that there are daily-wear lenses, monthly, three-month and lenses of long-term use (6-12 months). The less time the use of lenses, thinner they are and therefore more comfortable for the eyes. Do not use lenses longer than it is recommended. And it is not recommended to wear lenses for a long time without taking off. It is better if you put them in the morning and take in the evening, not longer. While some lenses you can afford to carry many days (so-called “breathable” contact lenses).

And the lens is very good that there are colored and enhancement cosmetic contact lenses. This allows you to change the shade or eye color. If you correctly pick the color (some salons have samples lenses, which can be examples), we can achieve extraordinary effects! Change your style with colored contact lenses, you’ll love it! It’s really very beautiful.

But, of course, to choose the contact lenses right, you must consult with an ophthalmologist. Now any self-respecting salon-optics offers the service of a doctor. Take care of your health!

soft

rigid gas permeable (RGP)

Soft contact lenses contain 25% to 79% water, are easy to adapt to and are quite comfortable.

Rigid gas permeable contacts provide better visual acuity, durability, and deposit resistance than soft contact lenses. Here’s a look at a comparison of different contact lenses. You choose which one is right for you.

Daily-wear soft lenses

These contacts are made of soft, flexible plastics that allow oxygen to reach the eyes. They are easy to adjust to and quite comfortable. They are also available in tints and bifocals.

Daily-wear disposable soft lenses

Daily disposable contact lenses are the ultimate in convenience. There is no need to clean, disinfect, or add enzymes to the lenses–just throw them away after each use. You simply replace it with a fresh, new, and sterile pair every morning. They are ideal for traveling because there is no need to transport contact lens solutions or cases. They are also ideal for sports because there is much less concern over the possibility of losing a contact lens.

Extended-wear soft lenses

These contacts can usually be worn for up to seven days without removal but now there exists also a new extended –wear soft lens. A new generation of contact lens is making 30-day contact lens wear available once again. These “continuous wear” lenses are made from new super-permeable silicone hydro gel materials. The lenses provide much more oxygen to the eye than most conventional extended wear contact lenses, making 30-day extended wear a safer option than before.

Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP)

Rigid gas permeable contact lenses take longer to adjust to, but are more resistant to deposit buildup. With a lifespan of 1-2 years, they are also more durable. Although initially more costly, they tend to be less expensive over the long run and can offer some people crisper vision than they would get with soft contacts. RGP lenses are available in tints and bifocals.

Dry Eye Syndrome Symptoms

Persistent dryness, scratching and burning in your eyes are signs of dry eye syndrome. These symptoms alone may prompt your eye doctor to diagnose dry eye syndrome.

But sometimes your eye doctor may want to measure the amount of tears in your eyes. A thin strip of filter paper placed under the lower eyelid, called a Schirmer test, is one way to measure tear production.

Another symptom of dry eyes is a “foreign body sensation”, the feeling that something is in the eye. And it may seem odd, but sometimes watery eyes can result from dry eye syndrome, because the excessive dryness works to overstimulate production of the watery component of your eye’s tears.

According to the Schepens Eye Research Institute in Boston, approximately 10 million people in the United States suffer from Dry Eyes. One risk factor for dry eyes that might be surprising is that wearing contact lenses can actually cause Dry Eyes. Why is it that contact lenses can cause Dry Eyes? Simply stated, Dry Eyes can occur if you either don’t have a sufficient quantity of tears or if the composition of the tears you do have is not correct.

Ohio State University researchers have ruled out contact lens solutions as a possible underlying cause of dry eye that may occur among contact lens wearers.

In an analysis of 360 contact lens wearers involved in a major Contact Lens and Dry Eye Study, researchers identified several factors that appear associated with development of dry eye. Factors contributing to dry eye included high water content in contact lens materials and individual problems such as greater eye discomfort even when contact lenses are not worn.

People wearing contact lenses also were likely to have dry eye when they reported inability to wear contact lenses for desired time periods and complained of dissatisfaction with contact lenses in general.

Dry Eyes and Soft Contact Lenses

Contact lenses are manufactured from one of two types of polymeric materials. Soft contact lenses are made from hydrophilic plastics that contain water. In fact they may contain anywhere from 30-75% water depending on what type of wearing schedule they are designed for. In general, the more water a soft contact lens contains, the more prone it is to dehydration and losing its water. This is not a desirable attribute because as water evaporates from the front surface of the lens while being worn, it reacts by absorbing water from your natural tear film, causing you to have symptoms of Dry Eyes. While in most situations dehydration is usually not a problem, common environmental conditions and activities can cause the dehydration to occur with resulting Dry Eyes. Conditions that may cause dryness, such as the heat being on in a room, using a hair drier, someone smoking or being exposed to smoke from any source, exposure to wind while running or even bike riding can cause soft contact lenses to produce Dry Eyes. Fortunately, dry eye symptoms from contact lenses is usually temporary and can often be minimized or eliminated by changing lens materials and or water content of the soft contact lenses. However, for patients who have been wearing their lenses for many years, there may be another cause. The continual rubbing of the lens across the surface of the cornea, may result in sloughing off of the microscopic hairlike structures that exist on the outermost layer of the cornea to assist in keeping the tear film stable. Years and years of gently chaffing these fine structures can result in poor tear film stability resulting in Dry Eyes. This can occur even if you are totally comfortable with you contact lenses and wear them successfully for most waking hours.

Rigid Gas Permeable Lenses and Dry Eyes

Rigid Gas Permeable Lenses are manufactured from polymeric materials that do not contain any water all. One would think that this is preferred to having the possibility of water evaporating from the lens and causing dry eye symptoms. However, the very nature of the Rigid Gas Permeable Contact Lens polymer is that is “hydrophobic” and tends to repel water and thus the tear film. Rigid Gas Permeable Contact Lenses must be specially formulated to enhance their wetting characteristics so that they are compatible with the tear film. Even with these formulations, their surfaces are more prone to drying and creating dry eye symptoms. The problem of mechanically chaffing the fine structures that attract the tear film and make it stable is even greater with Rigid Gas Permeable Lenses because of the stiffness of the lens…it is rigid.

Contact lenses can provide a great improvement over eyeglasses for people who are bothered by the cosmetic appearance of eyeglasses or the limitation to activities that they pose. To have a comfortable and successful contact lens wearing experience you should always be under the care of an eye care practitioner to be sure that the lens fit and lens materials you currently have are the best possible choice for you.

There are ways for contact lens wearers to combat dry eyes and feel comfortable in their lenses for longer periods of wearing time. Possible remedies of contact lens related dryness include:

Switching to a different lens material: There are lens brands designed specifically to provide more comfort for those who have problems with dryness. Some examples areProclear Compatibles and Acuvue Oasys. The newer, more oxygen permeable silicone hydrogel materials such as Focus Night & Day, Ciba O2 Optix, and Acuvue Advance have proven to be more comfortable for patients with moderate dry eye issues.

Contact lens rewetting drops: This is usually a temporary solution but does offer some relief. Some examples are Refresh Contacts, Clerz Plus, or Clear Eyes Contact Lens Relief. For those with sensitive eyes, it is best to use a preservative-free drop.

Prescription eye drops: Restasis is an anti-inflammatory eye drop prescribed for moderate to severe dry eyes and has proven to be very effective in cases where inflammation is the underlying cause of the dryness symptoms. Contact lenses should be removed before using these drops.

Take good care of lenses: Inserting fresh new lenses as often as prescribed, as well as cleaning lenses properly, greatly contributes to contact lens comfort. Protein deposits and other types of buildup on the lens surface contribute to increased lens dryness. Sometimes switching to a more disposable lens or switching to a different or stronger lens cleaning system also helps.

Re-soak lenses during the day: People who have dryness symptoms after a few hours of wearing time often experience much relief by removing and soaking their lenses for a few minutes. Upon reinsertion, most are able to wear their lenses comfortably for many more hours.

More complete and frequent blinking: Blinking completely and often is necessary to rewet the lenses and maintain comfort. It is often the case that when a person is concentrating, they do not blink as often as they should. This is why computer users often complain of lens dryness. It is important to consciously be aware of blinking frequently and completely under these circumstances.

Eyes are most precious organ of our body. Eyes adds vision to our life. About 80 % of what we perceive comes through the eyes. Our memories are made 80 % by images. The eye comes with information about the depth, distance, shape, color and movement of the objects.

In our generation many people have blindly accepted many vision related myths without thinking much on it. Following article tries to debunk Top 20 most common vision or eyesight related myths which some people are still believe in.

Contact lenses are better than Wearing Glasses. Wearing glasses is far safer option than using contact lenses. Glasses are not only cheaper but also easy to maintain than contact lenses. Glasses don’t stick on your eyes the way contact lenses do. Wearing and removing contact lenses is also a tedious and time consuming job.

Reading in the dark is bad for your vision. Although reading in dim light can cause tiredness to your eyes, but no harm can be caused.

Some exercises for eyes can improve your vision. Eye exercise do relax your eye but can’t improve vision. Any other efforts is a needless waste of time and does not bring any benefit. It is recommended to live a physically active life and have a balanced diet for keeping your eyes healthy.

The eyes can “wear out”. You can not “wear out” they are actively using them.

Older people eyesight is improving, as they get second sight. The “second sight” means the ability of people to see better as they get older. The reason for this vision improvement is that the lens of the eye is affected by increasing cataract.

Frequent sex (or masturbation) can lead to blindness. Enjoying active sex life and mastuurbation don’t make you blind. However sexually transmitted venereal diseases like syphilis, if left untreated, can lead to blindness, dementia and death. That is how this myth was born.

Sitting close to the TV is bad for your vision. There is no evidence that it is harmful to your eyes. Sitting to wherever is most convenient. The eyes may get tired of sitting in front of TV at a short distance, if the light in the room is too dim.

Wearing glasses is harmful to the eyes. In fact, in order to see well, you need to find glasses with a doctor. Points that do not suit you, do not harm your eyes.

If you need glasses, your eyes are not healthy. Need glasses has nothing to do with the health of your eyes. You just have some normal variation in the size or shape of the eye or a change that normally occurs with age.

Glasses can affect vision in some time. Wearing glasses has never declined. In fact, all a matter of habit. But not wearing glasses can worsen your eyesight.

Crossing the eyes produce strabismus. The incorrect eyes’ posture is the result of developmental impairments. Crossing the eyes for amusement is not dangerous.

Blind people have a sixth sense or any talent. Most people with perfect vision do not pay attention to senses like sound, smell and touch in their daily activities. Blind people automatically start adopting, practicing and relying on other body senses. This is not a sixth sense; it’s a result of hard work and continuous practice.

There is no need to check the eyesight before you are forty years. The eye disease may occur at any time. Everyone should receive regular eye tests, even if you don’t have any vision related problems. Early diagnosis is better to treat any disease. There are eye diseases that are treatable. Glaucoma, for example, is one of those things that appear before you banging forty.

LASIK Eye Operation Cures Eyesight. Lasik don’t cure eyesight permanently. Though painless it is still a risky operation and comes with heavy future side-effects. It is much better to continue wearing glasses or contact lenses than burning your sensitive eyes under a laser. I still don’t understand why doctors call Lasik, a safer option? Many people opt for LASIK operation to get rid of glasses as they believe this will boost their personality. It makes no sense to risk your precious natural eyesight just to boost personality. So stop fighting over it and remove the world ‘LASIK’ from your Life. If you still don’t want to compromise on natural vision and fashion then visit your nearest optical stores and ask for a stylish frame which suit your personality type. Stylish glasses looks attractive on most people, then why not wear them?

Doctors can do eye transplants. It is impossible to transplant a whole eye. It is connected with the brain optic nerve. If it is cut, it will not connect again. So full eye transplant sounds good only in fiction and movies. When doctors figure out how to do a brain transplant, they will be able to transplant the eye. However eye parts like corneas can be transplanted.

Scientists have created a “bionic eye”. Researchers working on a microchip, replacing the damaged retinal cells in the central vision. Other scientists have tried to find out a way to connect the camera directly to the brain. The eyes and brain do not work as a computer and a video camera. Even if you get a bionic eye, it still is not possible to connect it to the brain.

The sun is not harmful if wearing sunglasses or if developed strabismus. Solar ultraviolet light can damage the sensitive cornea, retina and lens. Looking at the sun, you may be not only a headache and a temporary distortion of vision, but a permanent impairment of the function of eyes. Never look at a solar eclipse. Direct sunlight can make a person blind in less than a minute.

Eat a lot of carrots to improve vision. Good nutrition is important for overall health, including your eyes. But Only a small amount of vitamin A, contained in the carrots, is necessary to maintain good vision.

The vein of the iris can show a person’s health. Similarly to the fingerprints, the veins of the iris are very personal and cannot display the health of the owner.

Nothing can be done to prevent vision loss. Regular inspection of eyes, healthy life style, and respect for the eyes can help you protect most precious sensory organ. If there are any problems with your vision, you should immediately contact an ophthalmologist. If the disease is detected at an early stage of development, it can either prevent or slow down. So start caring your eyes to preserve their good natural health.

New study from the USA shows that smoking soon after waking increases risk of lung cancer, because the shorter the time between waking and having a first cigarette, no matter how many you smoke a day, the higher is your levels of circulating cotinine, a derivative of nicotine that is made in the body and which has been linked to higher risk of lung cancer.
The scientists said that smoking cessation programs should take into account the time smokers waits before they have their first cigarette of the day because it could make a significant difference to their nicotine uptake.

The leader of the research is Dr Joshua E Muscat, professor of public health sciences at Penn State College of Medicine in Hershey, Pennsylvania. “Since cotinine levels appear to reflect the risk of lung cancer, our results suggest that smokers who smoke immediately after waking may be especially at risk for lung cancer.” said Dr Joshua E Muscat. “These people may require a more intensive intervention than other smokers to help them quit smoking on a sustained or permanent basis.”
The blood concentration of the metabolite cotinine is a nice indicator of how well our organism absorbs nicotine when we smoke cigarettes.
Previous researches have shown there is a wide variation in cotinine levels per cigarette smoked, and the researchers assumed that it depends on how often a smoker smokes, and there might be other nicotine dependence behaviors that affect cotinine levels, such as time to first cigarette after waking. This in turn affects a smoker’s chances of quitting as well as impacting smoker’s health.
There were recruited 252 healthy black and white community-dwelling daily cigarette smokers for the study and examined a number of behaviours that are believed to reflect the urge to smoke. They also measured their plasma and urinary cotinine levels.
The results showed that:

Among one pack per day smokers, there was a 74-fold difference in plasma cotinine levels: from 16 to 1,180 ng/mL

There were observed two types of nicotine-dependence: low and high

The “low” dependent participants smoked their first cigarette more than 30 minutes after waking, and they nearly all smoked 20 or less cigarettes a day. Cotinine levels in the low dependent group increased in line with how many cigarettes they smoked per day.

The “high” dependent participants smoked their first cigarette of the day within 30 minutes of waking but had a wide range (from 6 to 70) in how many cigarettes they smoked per day. The cotinine levels in the high dependent participants group varied little by cigarette frequency compared with the low dependent group, with a plateau effect appearing for heavy smokers (more than 30 per day).

The conclusion of the research could be transmitted with the words of Dr Joshua E Muscat: “These findings suggest that the time to first cigarette is a strong predictor of nicotine uptake and should be considered in the design of smoking interventions. It is unclear why smokers who take their first puff immediately after waking have higher cotinine levels, but this may reflect a more intense pattern of smoking. We need to find out why this is.”
Dr Joshua E Muscat and his team are now trying to find out if time the first cigarette affects levels of other nicotine metabolites. If they find a similar link, then time to first cigarette may become another risk factor for lung cancer.
