Contact Lenses May Harm Vision
Why do we need contact lenses? Most people prefer them instead of glasses, which, in their view, distort the appearance. In addition, there are many other benefits for contact lenses wearers:
- vision becomes more natural, the size of objects close to the real;
- the contact lens moves with the eye, so there is no distortion inherent in the use of glasses;
- the field of view is not limited as by spectacles;
- contact lenses never mist.
According to ophthalmologists at the University of Alabama, contact lenses can be harmful to the eyes.
Scientists studied the structure of tears of 80 volunteers, wearing contact lenses. Samples of tears were gathered by participants of the study using a thin glass tube during 30 days.
The scientists examined the biological changes in the eyes, set by minor fluctuations of the levels of inflammatory proteins in tears, which are called “cytokines“.
According to scientists, the number of cytokines is a strong indicator of your overall eye health, which is particularly true for contact lenses wearers.
As a result, oculists in the USA came to the conclusion that persons who wear lenses daily for 30 or more days have the increased level of cytokines, resulting that later the eye inflammation may occur, so contact lenses may harm vision. Also contact lenses can cause irreparable harm to the eyes, especially the cornea, since they reduce the flow of oxygen to the cornea.
